We were eating dinner and all of a sudden there was a GORGEOUS HORSE outside our window, grazing! AMAZING! Later that evening, the same group of horses slept on the other side of our RV! We felt special! It was GREAT!

Camping on Assateague Island offers a truly unique experience. Picnic at your campsite, hang out on the beach, ride your bike, walk or drive leisurely throughout the park all while you observe Assateague’s beautiful horses be just that…. BEAUTIFUL AND WILD!

The wild horses are on the Virginia side and the Maryland side of the island. Camping is only available on the Maryland side of Assateague.

Campground sites:
Oceanside Drive-in for tents, trailers and recreational vehicles (no hookups) with picnic table and fire ring

Oceanside Walk-in for tents only 100-200 ft. from centralized parking with picnic table and fire ring

Bayside Drive-in for tents, trailers and recreational vehicles (no hook ups) and a Generator Free Zone with picnic table and fire ring

Group Camping for clubs/affiliated groups only 100-200 ft. from centralized parking and can be reserved year round, up to 6 months in advance ($50 per night per site) with picnic table and fire ring with grill

Horse Camp (2 sites available) for horse camping October 16 through April 14, Accomodates up to 6 people and 6 horses, generators allowed from 6 a.m.-10 p.m., reservations up to 6 months in advance ($50 per night per site)

Campground Amenities include bathrooms with cold water showers. Drinking water available as well. Sites are first come first serve November 16 through March 14. Rates are $30 per night. Campground loops (areas) have site hosts and there are dump stations on each loop.

It is so COOL to be camping among these awesome ponies! So many people were excited to snap photos and watch these wild animals in their natural habitat.

Please bring these two key words to mind when visiting Assateague….

RESPECT AND SAFETY!

Park regulations are strict here, as they should be, and prohibit visitors from any contact with the horses. Restrictions include NO PETTING OR FEEDING these wild horses as this is dangerous for people as well as the horses. Stay at least a “BUS LENGTH” away and KEEP WINDOWS CLOSED if in your car. Assateague’s wild horses have been known to bite and kick people who have moved to close to them or bothered them. Unfortunately, some horses have been hit and killed by cars on Assateague. So, overall let common sense and respect for wildlife ensure that you and your group have a GREAT TIME camping on Assateague Island.
